Networks

  • Euromontana
    An association for co-operation between mountain territories. The network acts to promote the economic, social, cultural and environmental interests of mountain areas, bringing together regional and national mountain organisations and socio-professional organisations, in particular agriculture, environmental and rural development agencies, associations, territorial authorities and research institutes. Euromontana currently represents 45 organisations in 16 European countries, including organisations from Western, Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Initiative at the Edge
    Encourages communities, public agencies and Government to work together to produce rural development ideas. Currently covers eight rural communities in Scotland: Uig and Bernera, Bays of Harris, Lochboisdale and Eriskay (all in the Western Isles); as well as Colonsay, Ardnamurchan, North Sutherland, and the Orkney islands of Westray and Papa Westray.
  • IQ-Net
    A network of regions whose aim is to improve the quality of Structural Fund programming through exchange of experience. The network exchanges experience on aspects of programme development, management and evaluation, bringing together ideas from across the EU and sharing information on good practice.
  • Mountain Forum
    European-wide network promoting global action toward equitable and ecologically sustainable mountain development through information sharing, mutual support and advocacy, conferences etc.
  • NORA
    NORA (Nordic Atlantic Co-operation) extends the Westnordic Co-operation between Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands to include coastal Norway, with the aim of improving the framework and conditions for industry, trade and development in the Nordic Atlantic Region. Established by the Nordic Council of Ministers, NORA supports innovative processes, networking and research-and-industry-co-operation. No specific sectors are chosen, but marine environment and resources, transport and IT as well as tourism and industry are main areas covered. The Co-operation also encourages projects which involve neighbouring areas such as Canada, Scotland and Northern Russia.
  • RuralNet: the Rural Development Network
    An online, relationship-based peer support network which aims to share knowledge, facilitate partnership and develop and manage rural development projects.
  • Trans European Rural Network (TERN)
    Facilitates contacts between groups based in marginalised rural zones. Coverage –Scotland, Denmark, Portugal, Ireland, France, Greece.

Research Institutes

  • Centre for Local and Regional Development
    The Center for Local and Regional Developme
    nt in the Faroes. The research range is comprehensive, but the primary objects of rent is an independent research project which is intended to advance social science research search are the Faroese regions and their developmental opportunities. In its choice of research topics, the Center gives special attention to topics relevant to those municipalities that contribute financially to the center.

  • Centre for Regional Science (CERUM)
    Located at the University of Umeå in northern Sweden, CERUM aims for a long-term build up of competence within spatial theory, models for stimulating spatial structures and dynamics, GIS spatial analyses and statistics, plus implementation and evaluation of spatial policy.
  • Centre for Rural Economy
    Research centre at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne focusing on sustainable development for rural areas, with current work falling into two strands: rural development and agri-environment. The research is conducted at local, regional, national and European level.
  • Countryside and Community Research Unit
    A specialist rural research centre, with current programmes of research on rural community development, rural poverty, agri-environment policies, local sustainability and rural recreation in the UK, Europe and worldwide.
  • Dalarna Research Institute
    A regionally-based research institute founded by the County Council of Dalarna, Sweden, when radical restructuring was taking place in the industries that had historically dominated the labour market in this partly rural region. It has a twofold assignment: firstly, to carry out research and development work relevant and necessary for Dalarna's continuing development, and secondly, to actively seek to raise the standards of competence in the region.
  • Danish Centre for Forest, Landscape and Planning (Skov & Landskab)
    The Danish Centre for Forest, Landscape and Planning (Skov & Landskab) is a cooperative venture between three independent institutions: the Department of Economics and Natural Resources at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, the Danish Forest and Landscape Research Institute, a government research institute (see above), and the Danish Forestry College, a national training centre for forestry and landscape management. The Centre aims at forming a framework for all national activities within the subject area, focusing on the following fields: forests and forestry products; parks and landscape; physical planning; recreation and tourism. In addition, the Centre works within the fields of economics, scientific theory, and educational theory and practice.
  • Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DFLRI)
    The Danish Forest and Landscape Research Institute (DFLRI) is a sector research institute under the Ministry of the Environment in Denmark. The Department of Urban and Regional Planning within the Institute is engaged in research, development, consultation and dissemination of knowledge on planning and land management, aiming to contribute to the sustainable development of urban and rural areas. The Department has four main areas of research: urban environment and urban planning; regional planning and planning of rural areas; national planning and international planning collaboration; and planning-related GIS.
  • Institute for Future Studies
    A multidisciplinary research institute in Stockholm, Sweden, which conducts scientific studies of the future. The Institute's current research programme, "Shaping the Future: Demography and Democracy in the Twenty-first Century", extends over the years 2000-2004. The focus lies on technological, institutional and demographic aspects of long-range social change.
  • Institute of Local Government Studies, Denmark (AKF)
    Investigates problems that are of interest to the public sector and its users; in particular, problems that are relevant for Danish counties and municipalities including regional development issues.
  • Institute of Rural and Island Studies
    An initiative by Lews Castle College and the University of the Highlands and Islands Project to establish an international profile in the broad field of development studies in rural and island communities (covering economic, social, environmental, cultural and ICT aspects). The Institute will feature Gaelic as well as Nordic links as a key strategy in the development of international co-operation, education, research, and development.
  • Kemi-Tornio Polytechnic
    Situated in Finnish Lapland, near the Swedish border, and a gateway between the Barents region in Northern Russia and the rest of Europe. The polytechnic is made up of five units which specialise in different areas of education. The Polytechnic undertakes extensive international cooperation through its International Department, often in conjunction with local industry, including involvement in Interreg II and IIIA projects, and participation in EC and national Information Society programmes and projects.
  • Macaulay Institute
    Undertakes research that provides scope for rural economic development and a viable rural community structure.
  • Mlkkeli Institute for Rural Research and Training - University of Helsinki
    Independent unit of the University of Helsinki, and a parrallel unit to the Seinäjoki Institute (see below). Its purpose is to work towards the improvement of living conditions in the countryside and the development of rural sources of livelihood by means of research, development projects, training courses and publications.
  • Nordic Centre for Spatial Development - Nordregio
    Stockholm-based, centre for research, education and documentation on spatial development. Website includes downloads of top-quality statistical maps in Nordic countries (please mention Nordregio if you use their maps).
  • Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research (NIBR)
    National centre based in Oslo carrying out local and regional research, and also research into areas associated with the management of the environment and in the fields of the environment and development.
  • Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in Scotland
    Provides rural asset consultancy, conservation and business advice to government, other groups and the media. Includes a Scottish Rural Faculty.
  • Scottish Agricultural College (SAC)
    An education, research and consultancy organisation specialising, nationally and internationally, in services for the rural sector and for related industries.
  • Seinäjoki Institute for Rural Research and Training - University of Helsinki
    Independent unit of the University of Helsinki, and a parallel unit to the Mikkeli Institute (see above). Its purpose is to work towards the improvement of living conditions in the countryside and the development of rural sources of livelihood by means of research, development projects, training courses and publications. Its key areas of expertise are rural entrepreneurship, rural policy and rural culture.
  • University of Lapland
    Undertakes basic and applied research on northern issues, particularly research into welfare and that associated with minorities, international relations and research into international jurisprudence and applied environmental research in the north. Includes the Arctic Centre.
  • University of Oulu, Research and Development Centre of Kajaani
    An independent institute carrying out the regional task of the University of Oulu in the regions of Kainuu and Upper Savo. The function of the Centre is to support regional economy and its development through work in the fields of research, education and development. Includes the Unit of Continuing Education and Regional Development, whose areas of expertise include: regional development and rural development, continuing education for health care and social work, personnel training for the improvement of working life and working communities, information technology, and development of frontier areas.
