Marie Maceskova, Visiting Researcher (2008)
Marie Maceskova, from the Department of Social Geography and Regional Development at the Charles University in Prague, visited EPRC for two months in Spring 2008 to study Structural Funds-related issues. Marie had already taken part in IQ-Net research on the Czech Republic which fed into the papers produced for the IQ-Net meeting held in the Algarve in late 2007 (more info here). During her stay at EPRC, she further enhanced her contacts with the IQ-Net team.

Adrian Colwell, Visiting Senior Research Fellow (2007-09)
Adrian Colwell is a Visiting Senior Research Fellow in EPRC. He is a former Special Adviser to the First Minister and before that Chief Executive at the Centre for Local Economic Strategies and head of policy at CoSLA (the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities). He will be working with Charlie Woods and other EPRC colleagues on the challenges and opportunities facing economic development policymakers in small countries and regions across Europe.

Ebru Ertugal, Visiting Researcher (2007)
Ebru Ertugal is a Research Fellow and Co-ordinator for regional policy and governance at the Centre for European Studies, Middle East Technical University. Her research expertise focuses on EU cohesion policy, regional governance, multi-level governance, Turkey, neo-institutionalism and Europeanisation. Ebru stayed at EPRC as a visiting Research Fellow in May 2007 to exchange research expertise on regional policy developments in Turkey and the EU Member States. Links with the Centre for European Studies have been further developed since her visit, not least through contacts with Fiona Wishlade and John Bachtler.

Eleonora Carnevali, Visiting Researcher (2006)
Eleonora Carnevali is a researcher at RESCO Scarl in Ancona, Italy. Her research experience has mainly focused on evaluation of the various regional OPs in Italy. She was a visiting researcher at EPRC between June and September 2006 where she took a particular interest in the Centre’s evaluation research, involving close collaboration with Laura Polverari.

Salomeea Romanescu, Visiting Researcher (2005)
Salomeea Romanescu is European Counsellor at the Ministry of European Integration in Romania. She visited EPRC between October and November 2005 where her research interests focused on the operation of the Structural Funds. In her time at EPRC, she cooperated in particular with the IQ-Net team.

Encarnación Murillo García, Visiting Researcher (2005)
Encarnación Murillo García is a lecturer at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid. Together with Maria Jesús Delgado, Encarnación undertook joint research with Douglas Yuill, Carlos Méndez and Fiona Wishlade in the course of 2005-06 (more info here) and was a visiting researcher in the Centre in autumn 2005. The output of the joint research was published by the Institute of Fiscal Studies in Spain (download here).

Maria Jesús Delgado Rodriguez, Visiting Researcher (2005)
Maria Jesús Delgado Rodriguez is a lecturer at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid. Together with Encarnación Murillo García, Maria Jesús undertook joint research with Douglas Yuill, Carlos Méndez and Fiona Wishlade in the course of 2005-06 (more info here) and was a visiting researcher in the Centre over the summer of 2005. The output of the joint research was published by the Institute of Fiscal Studies in Spain (download here).

Karol Olejniczak, Visiting Researcher (2004 and 2008)
Karol Olejniczak was a Visiting Researcher in EPRC for four months in 2004 when he contributed to an INTERACT-funded meta-evaluation of inter-regional cooperation in the EU (more info here). He then returned to EUROREG in Warsaw where he completed his PhD in 2007. In late 2007, Karol won a competitive research tender with Martin Ferry to carry out research on the use made of evaluations of EU-funded programmes (more info here). The research involves a comparative review of EU Member States’ experiences, with particular emphasis on Poland. Funding was awarded through a competitive call for research projects under the ‘Better Government’ (Sprawne Panstwo) Programme organised by Ernst & Young in Poland. As part of this new research project, but also to further develop research links between EPRC and EUROREG, Karol visited EPRC again in January/February 2008 (more info here).

Maciej Smetkowski, Visiting Researcher (2004)
Maciej Smetkowski is a researcher at the Centre for European Regional and Local Studies (EUROREG) at Warsaw University in Poland. He visited EPRC in March 2004, particularly to work on the Ex Post Evaluation of the Impact of Poland-Germany Phare CBC Programmes (more info here).

Olga Mrinska, Visiting Researcher (2004)
Olga Mrinska is Deputy Ukraine Programme Manager at the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom (DFID) and a lecturer at Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University. She stayed at EPRC in early 2004 as a visiting researcher. She provided research perspectives on regional development issues in Ukraine, whilst deepening her knowledge on such issues in the EU Member States and Accession Countries. She was particularly interested in: policy evaluation, factors influencing the regional investment climate, and area designation for regional policy purposes. Following her visit, John Bachtler paid a reciprocal visit to the Ukraine.

Tanja Mikeleit, Visiting Researcher (2002)
Tanja Mikeleit came to EPRC from the University of Dortmund. She was a visiting researcher at EPRC between September and December 2002 when, amongst other things, she worked on the Mid-Term Evaluation of the Nordrhein-Westfalen 2000-2006 Objective 2 Programme (more info here).

Gernot Maierbrugger, Visiting Researcher (2001)
Gernot Maierbrugger was a researcher at the Institute of Public Finance and Infrastructure Policy at the Vienna Technical University between 2000 and 2001. While completing his PhD, he was a visiting researcher at EPRC for much of 2001. Based on his interests in Austrian regional policy and Cohesion policy, Gernot contributed to the development of EPRC research on the shifting paradigm of regional policy from an Austrian perspective.

Agnieszka Olechnicka, Visiting Researcher (2000)
Agnieszka Olechnicka visited EPRC from Bialystok University in Warsaw in 2000. She came to EPRC in order to progress her doctoral research on peripheral regions and the information economy.

Niels Groth, Nordic Council Visiting Professor (1999)
Niels Groth was a Nordic Council Visiting Professor in EPRC from January to May 1999. He came to EPRC from the Danish Forest and Landscape Research Institute. He was educated in planning and sociology and has had experience both as a researcher and senior civil servant in local and regional planning, urban networking, land use and urban development. During his time at EPRC, he coordinated the Danish contribution to the EU Study Programme on European Spatial Development and was also involved in an Interreg IIc project on Urban Systems and Urban Networking in the Baltic Sea Region.

Eiko Thielemann, Visiting Researcher (1998)
During 1998, Eiko Thielemann spent a nine-month spell in the European Policies Research Centre as a post-graduate researcher. He was completing a PhD at the University of Cambridge and came to EPRC because of the Centre’s expertise in analysing the operation of the EU's Structural Funds across the Member States. During his time at EPRC, Eiko worked with Centre researchers to develop ideas on the governance of EU policies – published in EPRC’s Research Paper series as (download here). He also worked with Fiona Wishlade on comparative research on EC competition policy (download here).

Markus Gruber, Visiting Researcher (1997-98)
Markus Gruber is a leading regional policy researcher in Austria (with Convelop) and was formerly head of the Graz branch of the Austrian Institute of Technology and Regional Policy (InTeReg) at Joanneum Research. He was a Visiting Research Fellow at EPRC for three months in the late 1990s. His stay was used to build on previous collaborative projects undertaken with Professor John Bachtler and Ruth Downes and to develop new joint research. His research expertise focuses on regional innovation policy, labour market policy and evaluation. Since the mid 1990s, he has collaborated with EPRC on a number of research projects, including: Interim Evaluation of Austria’s Objective 2, RESIDER II and RECHAR II programmes in 1995-1999 (more info here); IQ-Net (more info here); and the Ex-ante Appraisal of the Development Plan for the Objective 1 Region of Austria (more info here). He has also had close ongoing links with Tobias Gross and other EPRC researchers on Austria.

Halgeir Aalbu, Nordic Council Visiting Professor (1997)
Halgeir Aalbu is currently a senior consultant at SWECO EuroFutures in Stockholm. He has extensive experience in the management of applied research and the evaluation of regional policy programmes and has been much involved in Structural Funds evaluations. He has held a number of senior posts in organisations such as Nordregio, the Nordland Research Institute in Norway, the Norwegian Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, the Research Council of Norway, and the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research. During his time as a Nordic Council Visiting Professor at EPRC in the second half of 1997, Halgeir was involved in a range of EPRC projects and activities. Since his time at EPRC, he has continued to collaborate with EPRC on a number of other research projects (more info here & here ).

Henrik Halkier, Visiting Researcher (1996-ongoing)
Henrik Halkier is Professor and Head of Department of International and Social Studies at Aalborg University in Denmark. He is also a past chair of the Regional Studies Association. His research experience is primarily in regional and economic development policies in Western Europe, especially in Britain and Denmark. He has collaborated with EPRC since the mid-1990s, not least in respect of IQ-Net (more info here) and EoRPA (more info here) research, for which he covers Denmark. Henrik has visited EPRC on a number of occasions, including in 2006 when he made a major seminar presentation to a policymaker and academic audience on the work of the Scottish Development Agency (more info here)

Paul Klemmer, Visiting Professor (1995-98)
Professor Dr Paul Klemmer was president of the Rhine-Westphalia Institute for Economic Research (RWI) and a Professor in the Faculty of Economic Science at the Ruhr University in Bochum. Until his retiral, he was the leading expert on regional policy in Germany and was a Visiting Professor at EPRC from 1995-98. During his period as Visiting Professor a number of joint projects were undertaken between EPRC and the RWI and John Bachtler also spent time as a Visiting Professor at the RWI.

Gregorz Gorzelak, Visiting Professor (1989-ongoing)
Grzegorz Gorzelak is Professor and Director of EUROREG at the University of Warsaw, Poland. His collaboration with EPRC dates back to 1989 with a series of joint EPRC-EUROREG projects on the regional dimensions of transition and the implications for regional policy and subsequently collaborative work on preparations for, and the implementation of, EU Cohesion policy in Poland and other countries in Central and Eastern Europe. During his time as Visiting Professor at EPRC, Gregorz has visited the Centre on numerous occasions including some longer visits. Amongst a series of collaborative projects, joint work has been undertaken on the evaluation of the German-Polish cross-border programme (more info here), the development potentials and needs of new Member States (more info here) and the reform of Cohesion policy (more info here)
